ABOUT US

SUDAN RECONSTRUCTION SKILLS SEARCH PROJECT, (“SRSSP” or “Sudan Reconstruction”) is a non-profit organization founded in 2005 by Julie Hines Mabus and Mangok Mayen, a refugee from Southern Sudan.  The foundation was born of a history of pain, strength and ultimately hope of the people of Southern Sudan.

For over a half of a century, the people of Southern Sudan have endured a civil war that has taken more than 2,000,000 lives, has robbed so many of its children of an education, has turned most of its towns and villages into a war-ravaged wasteland and has scattered millions of its people in a global Diaspora unlike the world has ever known.

This land is so rich in natural resources and these are men and women of science and letters, of heart and hope. This region now faces the promise of peace. Two, perhaps three generations of children have been born into this fierce war, and yet these Sudanese people, throughout it all, have never given up their beliefs and their hope for liberty and a better way of life.

Now the people of Southern Sudan, those that stayed during the war and those of the Diaspora, must work to preserve the peace and show to the world that Southern Sudan can be a model for strength in the time of transition and that Southern Sudan will grow and prosper because of the life and in the memory of John Garang and under the leadership of Salva Kiir Mayardit.

We cannot falter now. The time has come, and what a hopeful time it is! In that spirit, the Southern Sudanese living in America want and need to go home, if for a summer or a year or a lifetime, to help rebuild their beloved homeland.

Herein lies our mission, the mission of Sudan Reconstruction Skills Search Project. SRSSP will build humanitarian and economic bridges between the United States and Southern Sudan. By fostering education and work skills among the Southern Sudanese here and in Africa, and by securing economic avenues for applying this knowledge, SRSSP will work to insure that refugees of Southern Sudan will be the architects of a new Sudan.
